"Ares' Horns" - Marcasite Pendant

Wire Wrapped Marcasite Handmade Copper Pendant Necklace: Aries Ram Horns

Inspired by twisting vines, this pendant's bail is as unique as the pattern of a trees roots merging with the soil beneath. Creating this piece brings me back to my early days of wrapping, when I often didn't know where I would end up. I would just follow where the wire took me. Instead of sticking to the tried and true bail formations, I sought my creative freedom with every twist and coil. The V it created reminds me of the Sign of the Ram, Aries which was considered the temple of Mars.

Courage, domination, overcoming challenges and obstacles in your way are all ways that the God Mars shows up in our lives. I'm always finding new insights from the rich symbolism of the wandering stars. I hope this piece inspires you too.

My Artisanal Process

I wrapped this beauty in copper wire using techniques I've been perfecting for years. Each bend and weave is done by hand – no shortcuts. 

After completing the wirework, I apply a patina using a liver of sulfur solution that transforms the bright copper into a rich, dark gunmetal finish. I carefully dip it in a warmed sulphuric bath, then neutralize the chemical reaction with baking soda. The pendant then spends about 20 minutes tumbling with steel shot to polish the metal and remove excess tarnish, creating depth and highlights.

This darkened finish gives the pendant a vintage, almost medieval aesthetic. The result is a piece with the power to capture the eyes of many; ideal for someone who appreciates uniqueness and artisanal craftsmanship, rather than machine made, generic or name brand jewelry.

This pendant has some weight to it – not heavy enough to be uncomfortable, but substantial enough that you know you're wearing something real. The antique copper chain is sturdy and supports the piece nicely.

Caring for Your Jewelry

With wear, your jewelry will develop its own unique character; the dark patina will gradually lighten in high-contact areas, revealing the copper’s natural warmth beneath. To preserve your necklace’s appearance:

• Store in a jewelry box or tightly closed container when not wearing

• Take off before showering, swimming, or sleeping

• Keep dry to prevent unwanted green patina that can develop when copper meets moisture
